The Power of Truth: Why Living a Life of Integrity Matters

I struggled with a lack of self- confidence and self trust for as long as I can remember. In 2022 I  hit rock bottom and realized things needed to change. I started working with Inner U, a program developed by Lauren Handel and learned that personal integrity is the quickest, surest way to build confidence and self trust. I had heard the term integrity before, but didn’t fully understand its implications until reading her book Maybe It’s You. Since then, I have been on a kick and have been reading everything on the subject, including The Way Of Integrity: Finding the Path to Your True Self  by Martha Beck. In her book, Martha describes integrity to mean “to be one thing, whole and undivided.”

When I was living out of integrity, my soul, body and mind were divided. Parts of me were pitted against other parts. I could not stand my own company. I was fractured and in a chaotic state. I didn’t trust myself and was constantly looking outside for answers. Despite making vision boards and visualizing my dreams, nothing was happening. I was stuck and miserable. From this place, it is nearly impossible to be empowered and get momentum going towards your dreams.

After finding Inner U and working with a coach I declared I was no longer willing to be in a place of such chaos and disempowerment. I desired to feel the freedom, confidence and alignment that comes with honoring your word, speaking the truth and doing what you say you are going to do.

When you live a life of integrity, your actions are in alignment with your values. Your actions match your words. You are whole and complete. This is a high vibration to be in. A person with high personal integrity is powerful because energetically they are in alignment. This is a place where you can trust yourself, and are able to tune into your intuition and your own discernment. A person in this frequency is hard to control and hard to shake off their path.

Living in integrity means acknowledging the truth and making amends for lies and actions in the past that were out of alignment. This takes courage, but in the end is empowering and ultimately freeing because it allows you to get into alignment with your values and your word.

How To Cultivate Integrity

1. Keep your word- If you say you are going to do something, then do it. Keep your word to others as well as yourself. When you keep your word you are demonstrating you are whole and complete. That you can be trusted and mean what you say.

2. Tell the truth- The whole truth. Start by telling yourself the truth. Sit down with a journal and list out the lies you've ever told. Write them all down. Even the ones you want to take to the grave. Especially those. Then start by making amends and telling the truth to the people in your life that you lied to. Apologize and move on. Start small and work your way up.

3. Acknowledge When You Screw Up- You are going to mess up, and forget, or over commit. You might even sometimes tell a lie. That is ok- but own it. Acknowledge it. If you told someone you would call them at 7 PM and you didn’t- apologize and own your mess up. Don’t make an excuse, just acknowledge your part. Over time this will deepen respect you get from others and from yourself. Remember, integrity means to be whole, not to be perfect. To be in wholeness you must admit when you slip up. This actually will build trust and keep your integrity.

4.Keep at It- This is a muscle that needs to be strengthened. Keep at it. Honor your word and watch your life change to come into alignment with your soul's deepest desires and wildest dreams. Get support. Work with coaches, guides or mentors. I have a few. Lauren Handel has been my coach for 2 years and I am so thankful for her playful and confronting coaching method. Martha Beck also has coaches and mentors that can help you on this path of integrity.

Integrity as a Path to Empowerment

When you are whole in yourself you have more power. Your words have meaning. You are more confident and trust in yourself. From this place, you can manifest with ease and bring your wildest dreams into reality. Because you know you can count on you, and the divine, the creator and others in your life know that what you say you mean and that you take action. When you live a life of integrity, you find a sense of freedom that is not available to you when you don’t follow through, fall short on commitments and lie for the sake of people pleasing.

Florence Scovel Shinn in her book The Game of Life and How to Play It says “a person knowing the power of the word becomes very careful of his conversation. He has only to watch the reaction of his words to know that they do ʺnot return void.ʺ Through his spoken word, man is continually making laws for himself.”
