Samhain: The Wicca Holiday That Became Halloween

Samhain occurs between autumn equinox and winter solstice. It translates to “summer’s end” in Galic. Halloween has its roots in Samhain. It is also known as “Witches New Year” as it was celebrated as the New Year in Wicca culture. The celebration of this holiday traditionally began at dusk with the darkness. Light comes from dark. This is a holiday to remember the darkness, honor the dead, make plans for the next year and rejoice in the harvest of the summer. This holiday is a beautiful reminder of the cycle of the seasons, and the cyclic nature of life.

Samhain is celebrated from Oct 31 to Nov 1. It is a time for reflection, transformation and an opportunity to connect with other dimensions. This is a perfect time to do shadow work and look at your inner darkness. It is when you acknowledge the dark, that transformation can occur.

Ways to Celebrate Samhain

  1. Have a dinner

    • Enjoy seasonal foods from your area. Enjoy the summer harvest and share with your coven, or your people. Eating together is a beautiful way to celebrate.

  2. Have a bond fire

    • Gather in community around a bond fire. Fire symbolizes death and rebirth which is apart of Samhain. Gathering together in community amplifies the experience.

  3. Create an Ancestral Alter

    • Decorate with leaves, gourds and autumn colors. Put up photos of your loved ones, or items that remind you of them. Since the veil is thin this alter is a symbolic bridge to your ancestors, and those that have passed on.

Reflection Questions

What occurred in the past year? What are you letting go of?

What aspects of yourself are you not acknowledging?

What parts of yourself are you ashamed of?

How can you integrate these parts of yourself into wholeness?
