Dancing for Healing: Discover the Therapeutic Benefits of Dance.

Stress and anxiety are rampant in our culture. For me, I didn’t even realize how stressed and anxious I was until I wasn’t. I didn’t realize that there was a high pitched noise ringing in my mind until there wasn’t. Part of coming back into wholeness and balance with myself has been connecting my body and becoming embodied. I think one of the most overlooked forms of coming back into the body is dance. Beyond its entertainment value, dancing offers a myriad of therapeutic benefits that can enhance both mental and physical health. Tune into your inner child and express yourself through dance. Pretend that you are under water and move as if you are underwater. Embody an emotion or an archetype and move how it would move. Tell a story through your body. Most importantly dance gets you into your body. And when you are in your body you can let go of subconscious emotions, traumas and beliefs. 

Healing Benefits of Dancing:

  1. Mind-Body Connection.

    Dance gets you into the body and out of your head. A harmonious connection between the mind and body, encourages mindfulness and presence in the moment. As you focus on coordinating movements with music, you become more attuned to physical sensations and bodily cues, fostering a deeper awareness of yourself and your surroundings. You loose yourself in the dance, in the rhythm, in the beat and find a state of flow.

  2. Emotional Expression.

    Expressing emotions through movement can be incredibly cathartic. Whether you're feeling joy, sadness, anger, or excitement, dance allows you to channel those emotions into your body, providing a healthy outlet for expression. This can be helpful if you struggle communicating feelings or emotions

  3. Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem.

    Dancing encourages self-expression and self-discovery, which will foster a greater sense of confidence and self-esteem. As you learn to be in your body you will feel more confident and empowered in who you are and why you chose to come to Earth School.

How to get started? Here are a few tips.

  1. Take Dance Classes.

    Dancing in community is so much more powerful than dancing alone. It will help you to connect with others and to immerse yourself in the experience. Experiment and try different styles and teachers. Once you find a type of dance that you love, commit to it and go all in. Twerking for me has been life-changing.   2. Dance Alchemy.

    Dance Alchemy is a way to express your feelings and emotions through dance. Find a song that represents the emotion you are feeling. Then dance and move like the feeling. Give it your all. Fully embody the emotion. If after the song you feel like you need more put another song on. Most times though you will notice that after embodying the emotion for one song you will feel complete and ready to move on

  3. Get Out Of Your Head.

    Don’t worry about how you look. The goal is not to be a talented dancer. The goal is to get into your body and to move in a way that feels natural and expressive to you. Tune into your body, and move from an integrated space. That is where the healing will occur. If you are shy set an intention before you dance. When discomfort arises come back to your intention.

Incorporating dance into your life can be a transformative journey towards healing and self-discovery. Whether you're seeking stress relief, emotional expression, or improved physical fitness, the therapeutic benefits of dance are boundless. Let go of inhibitions, open your mind and move to the music. The subconscious lives in the body. When you connect to the body you tune into your subconscious. The subconscious is responsible for your behaviors, actions and is where our trauma and programming live. If you want to heal, change timelines or let go of the past you need to move the body… and dance.
