Finding Stillness in The Cold: A Winter Reflection
In the Northern Hemisphere we are in the midst of the winter season. Winter invites us to slow down, reflect, and embrace the stillness. Even our fast paced Western world grows quieter and slows down under the weight of the snow. Shorter days invite us to be inside more. While we have devices and a plethora of options to distract ourselves, this season I encourage you to unplug and reconnect with yourself to make space and to look within.
Nature is our greatest teacher, and mirror. The seasons show us how to care for ourselves. Winter reminds us to move slow, to reflect and hibernate. It can also show us how strong we can be and what we can overcome. Winter, and the colder months are the perfect time for introspection. May I remind you- stillness isn’t about doing nothing. Rather it is about being fully present. When you sit in stillness you can hear your inner voice, your intuition and guidance. You will let go of everything that is no longer serving you. Which will allow you to create space for what you want to create, and plant in the Spring.
Winter Rituals
Here are some simple ways to cultivate peace and presence during this reflective season:
1. Make A Cozy Drink.
Prepare yourself a warming tea like liquorice or a golden milk latte. Then sit by the fire or by the window and allow yourself to be fully present with your drink. Taste each sip. Put all other distractions away and be in the moment. You could do this in the morning and start your day this way, or wind down with your drink at night. Do whatever works for you.
2. Reflect By The Fire.
Schedule in time each week or every day to sit by the fire and journal. Set your timer for 5 minutes and write for the whole time. You can write from stream of consciousness. Meaning you just write what comes to mind. Don’t filter what comes out, just put it all down on the paper.
3. Spend Time Outside.
Go outside as if you are an explore charting new land. Notice the stillness and quiet of the world around you. Bundle up and go without your phone. Take in Mother Earth’s splendor and glory.
Make the most of the Winter season by taking time to reflect and look within. If you mirror Mother Nature and slow down, taking time to rest and restore you will set yourself up for a fruitful and vibrant Spring!
