Making and Keeping Promises.
I was gifted Inner U from my Meditation teacher in 2023 and I am forever thankful for her kindness. Inner U is an online course that has helped me to transform in a fun and playful way. It has helped me to see through my bullshit and get clear on what I desire. As we are in the beginning few days of 2025 have you set intentions? Have you gotten clear on where you are headed? Lauren and her team of exceptional coaches have shown me how funny us humans are. We are really shitty at keeping our word to ourselves and going for our dreams. Through her program and her book, Maybe It’s You: Cut the Crap. Face Your Fears. Love Your Life. I have learned the importance of promises and consequences for designing the life of your dreams.
Promises are the bedrock of trust. They shape how we interact with ourselves and others, determining our ability to cultivate meaningful relationships and achieve our goals. Yet, we don’t keep the promises we make…and so we shame and guilt ourselves which overtime degrades our confidence and trust. Your word is your wand, and when you don’t keep your word you loose your power. A sure way to build confidence is to keep your word or your promises you make to yourself. And if you don’t you can do the consequence. No need to beat yourself up or have a pity party. Pay the consequence and move on.
How to Make Promises
Be Honest.
A promise is not a wish or a hope—it’s a declaration of intent. Before committing, ask yourself:
Do I have the time and resources to fulfill this promise?
Does this align with my dreams?
Be realistic.
Avoid overpromising and reaching too big. Commit to something that is realistic and pushes you outside your comfort zone. (This is meant to stretch you).
Connect it to Your Dreams.
Promises grounded in your deepest desires are easier to keep.
Write It Down.
Writing it down makes it real. I write out weekly promises and consequences at the beginning of each week and then share with a friend.
Set Specific and Measurable Goals.
A vague promise like “I’ll eat less” is hard to keep because it lacks clarity. Make your promises specific like “I will eat a home-cooked meal sitting down with no distractions 5 days a week.” The more specific the promise, the easier it is to follow through. What can be measured can be managed.
Set A Consequence.
This is meant to be a playful sting that keeps you accountable to your dreams. It needs to be annoying, and for your betterment and something that will help you to keep your word. The key is to choose consequences that hold you accountable without creating undue stress.
How to Keep Your Promises.
Use Accountability Partners.
Sharing your promises with someone else increases the likelihood of follow-through. Whether it’s a coach, a friend, or a family member, let someone hold you to your word. Accountability will help you materialize your goals quicker.
Anticipate Obstacles.
Life is unpredictable, and challenges will arise. Before you break a promise, ask yourself:
Is there a way to adapt this promise to fit my current situation?
What tools can I use to stay on track despite difficulties?
Is this
Broken Promises.
If you’ve broken a promise, do your consequence and move on. If it involves someone else and they are impacted by your lack of integrity, acknowledge your part. Have a conversation and own it without making excuses. Apologize and offer a solution to restore trust. Recommit to a new promise or redefine what you are able to commit to.
Transforming Your Life Through Promises.
Promises are the building blocks of a life you love. By making thoughtful commitments and holding yourself accountable, you can transform your life. Start small—pick one promise that will get you to your dream. Every promise kept strengthens your integrity and brings you closer to the life you want to live. What promises are you making?
