Self- compassion is a part of overall wellness and is often overlooked. You must first identify your suffering to learn to develop compassion for yourself. Witness your self talk and then decide to choose compassion over judgement. Notice your emotions with curiosity, but do not get swept away with them. Self-compassion is crucial to overall wellbeing. You can only treat others the way you treat yourself. When you can love and accept yourself, your emotional resilience will be stronger and you will have decreased levels of stress and anxiety.
Ways To Cultivate Self-Compassion
Practice Mindfulness
Develop mindfulness practices. This will help you become aware of your thoughts and feelings. You can only change something once you are aware of it. Sit down with a cup of tea and bring your full attention to it. Go for a walk barefoot and feel the Earth beneath your feet. These are both ways to practice mindfulness.
Baby Picture
Put a picture of yourself as a child up where you can see it frequently. When you pass it, connect to the inner child within you. Then, when you are out in the world and you notice you criticize yourself, see the picture in your mind’s eye. Remember that the innocent child in the photo is you. Speak to yourself with the same tenderness and compassion you would to a child.
Self Massage
Connect to your body and lather yourself in oil. Massage yourself in the morning. As you massage your body, see it, bring your full awareness to the practice. Thank your body for all it does for you. Send it love and acceptance. After the massage, wash the oil off in a shower or bath. What you put your attention on grows. Seeing your body and caring for yourself in this way will build your relationship with yourself. It is also a wonderful way to detox the body of toxins and stress.
Self- Compassion Mantra
A Mantra is a Sanskrit word. It is a sacred phrase that the mind can anchor to during times of unease. Create a mantra that you can repeat to yourself out loud or silently when you find yourself in challenging moments.
Developing self compassion is an incredible tool for deepening relationships with others and navigating the currents of life. When you practice self compassion, you are building a sound foundation for a happier and more fulfilling life.
